About Ugears Models

At the beginning of 2014, Ukrainian designer Denis Okhrimenko decided to deliver products in wooden boxes-designers. To raise money for a business project, first Ohrimenko started selling just designers - without food inside. In 2014, he several times showed a grocery project at Startup.ua, but the idea of ​​delivering food to investors did not inspire. But I liked the project to create 3d wooden mechanical puzzles. Moreover, Denis was already able to show a "living" example - a prototype of a wooden box.

The first investor was found at the same Startup.ua conference. So, Ohrimenko got his first money for renting two wood cutting machines. This is now about 190 people and 100 machine tools in the UGears team, and at that time Denis collected sheets with parts in a set in the kitchen and packed himself while the courier was waiting outside the door. 4-5 orders per month were considered incredible success.
Apparently the novice entrepreneur understood that the usual wooden puzzles, which at that time were already known in the market, could not be hooked on the buyer. Then he came up with the idea of ​​creating not just designers, but a wooden semblance of “steam-punk fantasies”. Denis was interested in the complex mechanisms of skeleton watches (those in which gears are visible) and such an unusual embodiment was ideally suited for mechanical designers.
If you look at today's models, the “steampunk spirit” and the semblance of a skeleton watch mechanism are indeed present. Designers work at the expense of mechanics and all internal mechanisms are visible. Some buyers even require models to add realism, but Ohrimenko is not going to do it yet:
“After all, we, as expressionist artists, do not work in realism. It is important for us that the case is transparent, that the mechanism is visible, it is an important part of the design with us, ”says Denis in an interview with EcoTechnica.

“You do not need to compare UGEARS models with Lego,” says Denis Okhrimenko, author and creator of 3D-designers, although he does not hide the fact that the company seeks to achieve the same worldwide fame!
“When the UGEARS company was just beginning to exist, the designers had to be packed literally on their knees, sitting in the kitchen,” recalls Denis.
Until 3D-designers got to the thematic exhibition, there were no big sales. Then there was the opening of an online store and the promotion of products through social networks, which increased sales from 1600 to 3000 units. per month.
Of course, the user himself brings value to the product, because when collecting a designer, a miracle just happens in his hands and the model comes to life.

Manufacturing and Technology

In 2015, 3 machines operated in the UGEARS workshop, in 2016 - 16, and at the beginning of 2019 - as many as 100! A day, machines could produce about 66 of the most complex models, where one model takes from 20 minutes to 1 hour. Up to 50,000 models were produced per month at full load.
When choosing material for the models, materials such as cardboard, polystyrene foam, acrylic and lamella were developed and tested. But low wear resistance, inappropriate properties and high rejection have chosen plywood.
All UGEARS designers are made of high quality plywood with a sheet thickness of 3.5-3.7 mm with a cut, the thickness of a human hair, which allows you to create such incredible designs!
The design of each model is sustained and strict, although the company is considering manufacturing models for the fair half of humanity, and one of the latest developments in this direction is a flower with expanding petals.
Now the company has hundreds of ideas for implementation, ranging from gramophones with wooden plates to half-meter telephone directories.
